Wandering Around South Jersey - Order Now!
Or Visit Your Local Bookstore!

Southern New Jersey is a unique area of the Delaware Valley. On one side you have the sprawling suburbs of Philadelphia, and on the other the Pine Barrens, which cover more than one million acres of land, or about one fifth of the state Of New Jersey. Most people do not know what lies in between the strip malls, highways and forests. In Wandering Around South Jersey, Ryan Stowinsky explores these areas. Take a trip to the Scarborough Covered Bridge - one of the only covered bridges in New Jersey. Visit Hollowfield Cemetery, a cemetery with no gravestones. The book also explores some of New Jersey's more notable landmarks, including Margate City's Lucy the Elephant and the world's first dinosaur, the Hadrosaurus.

It took 2 years to complete the book and I enjoyed every minute of it. In fact, it's the only time I can think of where work was actually rewarding. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

Welcome to the Wanderer, a site about ghost towns, abandoned places, places with little known or forgotten history, roadside curiosities, and the occasional tourist trap. We deal primarily with southern New Jersey and the Pine Barrens, but we are now based in the Poconos and slowly learning our way around Pennsylvania. Over the past few years, we've been slowly expanding and including more out of area places, going as far north as New England and as far west as Indiana.
Feel free to browse the 200+ places I've visited and photographed.
Our message board is always seeking new members, so don't hesitate to sign up and post.

South Jersey Magazine

There is a 2 page article about me in the March issue of South Jersey Magazine.

I've put together pages for the books I've appeared in so far. They've all been moved to the Works page.

Site News/Updates

4/18

Well, nearly 3 months of nothing, here's an update. 3 new things - 1 from NJ and 2 from PA:

Ruins off Mt. Misery Road
Grave of Margaret Dillinger (PA)
"Hidden" Cemetery in Hickory Run State Park (PA)

One change coming in the near future is giving Pennsylvania its own pages, much like how I have New Jersey categorized now.

A few people have stumbled upon my MySpace, so I'm adding a link for it here.

4/6

Not an update. Just pointing out it's our 1 year wedding anniversary. We rule.

3/30

I know an update is long overdue. However, I wasn't expecting to get laid off this week. Finding work is my priority right now.
Once this slump is over, I promise there will be an update.

In the meantime, if you want to help cheer me up, post on my stagnant forum, help out my book sales, or tell me how awesome my South Jersey Magazine interview was (Volume 4 Issue 11, or as I like to refer to it - the one with the hot chick on the cover).

3/11

Regarding Lines on the Pines this past weekend, I apologize for those coming to see me who weren't able to buy a book. It was not made fully clear that I was supposed to supply my own books, so long story short, I had an empty table. I was around but not at the table very often - because I really had no reason to be there. I was glad to have met so many people though. Thanks for coming out, and again I apologize. Perhaps next time I'll get it right.

February was the first month in over 4 years in which I didn't add anywhere new to the site. I was quite literally snowed in every weekend. Now that spring is approaching, I can finally start looking for new places to find.

I'm considering adding videos of some places to the site. For about 2 years now I've been randomly shooting short videos of some of the places with my digicam. I'm considering the idea of an actual camcorder sometime in the near future, whenever bills stop hating me.

Guess it's time for an update. 3 new things:

The "Cannonball" Tunnel, PA - abandoned railroad tunnel
Delsea Drive-In - New Jersey's only drive-in theater still in operation
Vineland Speedway - remains of a racetrack from the 50's and 60's

Repeat of last year - store prices have been reduced again.

My book hit #1 under New Jersey books on Amazon today. I know it's only going to be for a very brief period of time, but the fact that it even reached that point is beyond my comprehension. I truly don't know what to say. I was ecstatic when it hit #10.

I'd like to thank everyone who has supported me, the book, and this dumb lil' website for the past 6½ years. It's been quite a trip.

Don't forget about the site's mailing list. Be the first to find out about new places and updated pages. The mailing list is now ad free. Munch on that, Bravenet.
